How much do UK bike technicians get paid?
|
I moved to the US about 20 years ago and am now ready to move back (I
presume all the points on my license have gone by now!). I've been a bike
mechanic here for almost all of that time. Over here almost all mechanics
are paid a flat rate fee for the job. This normally equates to about 30-40%
of the shop rate. I never worked as a tech in the UK and have heard they all
get paid hourly. Just trying to figure out what kind of lifestyle I can lead
once I get back. Also, how hard is it to register a bike I bring from the
US?
Cheers, toecutter.

Some places pay hourly. Some have a basic wage plus an incentive scheme
which can encourage people to cut corners IME.
Not many ads come up on fish4.co.uk - only one has a pay rate
"Salary: £19,000-£22,000 Basic OTE £27k +Superb Benefits"
If you have experience with the latest models of a particular marque then
you might be able to get a better paid job. I know the technicians at a
BMW franchise in Cardiff were offered very good packages in a bid to ensure
they did not get poached by rivals.
