OT: WiFi-isti
|
My broadband account was closed the other day, and I'm taking the
oppurtunity to switch to Sky. I've probably got a couple of weeks of
waiting before my account is enabled so I'm on a neighbour's
connection for the time being.
He's got WPA enabled and I can logon using my laptop, however my
desktop gives me grief telling me the network key should be 10 or 36
ascii characters. I've got an 8 char key which works fine on this
machine. A bit of searching the web suggests it's an XP SP2 thing, but both are
SP2.
So, I'm thinking that I could try and bridge the connection using my
WRT54G router instead. Having never done this before, I'm wondering
what I should do. Do I set the wifi name as the same SSID etc ...

Are you sure what you have is not a passphrase? Windows is possibly
looking for the key which (AIUI) is generated from the passphrase.
There may be a setting to swap, but ICBA to boot up an XP laptop.

It's definitely the key, as I've successfully got on with my laptop. To be
honest, I decided last night that the problem is most likely with my
Shuttle's in-built wifi adapter. Just got back from PCWorld with a £20 USB
adapter. All's well!
