Holiday in S of France near Grenoble. What to see...
|
Where to go etc. I can see loads of good roads, Col de Rousset etc etc.
We are out there for 7 days in total.
|
Depending on how far you want to stray, Moustiers is nice, as is the
Grand Canyon du Verdon.
|
|
There's a place called Vaison La Romaine which has the most wonderful Roman
ruins.

I used Grenoble as a touring base for my first foray into the Alps in
1995. Coincidentally, we spent 7 days there too, with 1 overnight stop
in each direction.
We did circular tours and it worked out quite well. The best routes we
took were:
NE to Albertville then Beaufort. SE to the Cormet de Roseland is
excellent
Mont Cenis. W to Briancon and the pretty fast Col de Lauterat back to
base in Grenoble.
S via Route Napoleon to Gap. SE to Barcelonnette, Jausiers. Up then down
the Col de la Bonnette. NE via Col de Vars & Izoard back to Briancon and
another blast along the Lauterat.
We did a few others but it's very easy to plan circular routes, whether
you want to bimble through scenery or see everyhing as a blur.
I liked Grenoble as a city. It's probably changed since I was there.
There was a pleasant daytime cafe area between the cathedral and river.
Not so nice at night as the neon signs were illuminated and the touts
tried to persuade you to enter their seedy club.
Across the river from the main city centre (opposite the base of the
Telegraphique and under the cliffs) was a Quai with an Italian flavour.
A great selection of restaurants.

The Charteuse Distillery at Voiron, very close to Grenoble. Well worth a
visit, and a little 'sampling'.
Route Napoleon, of course.
La Mure is pretty.
