Download probs

GigaNews' speed test/traceroute says my line is pushing 275-350 Kb/s

And yet GrabIt can only manage 70-ish Kb/s

Why? Why is it so sodding slow to download?

I've defragmented the drive, in case it was having trouble writing, but
it's not that. I can't work out why it's hitting 350-400 one day, and
barely managing 70 the next.

Any ideas?
Because your pipe is this big -> O but their pipe is this big -> o

Many sites limit a connection, to say 75kb, to stop one person
sucking all their bandwidth. But with a download manager you
can use multiple streams to download the same thing.
Unless the site uses an intelligent load-balancer that detects people
using download managers. Some sites explicitly ban them.

I'd recommend you get hold of a download manager like
GetRight, as this can do upto 4 streams for the same
source, so you may be able to get 4x 75kb out of it.
Takes ages to download....
Unless of course they are running something that detects that you are
running a download manager and a) blocks the other sessions from
connecting and b) throttles your existing sessions even harder for
being cheeky.
