OT:Who knows about clarinets?

Number 1 daughter's school had a bloke round touting for music lessons
and daughter has decided that she wants to try clarinet.
Bloke's organisation is a registered charity (Music for Schools) and it
was the most charming session of hard sell I've come across in some
time, including the once only, never to be repeated offer so long as we
sign up before Monday.
The clarinet they're trying to sell us rolls in at =A3299, which seems
to be significantly more expensive than prices available on internet
retailers, even for reasonable brands (or, at least brands that I've
heard of).

Any experience of the Music for Schools organisation or of clarinet
buying in general?
My daughter decided she would like to try the clarinet. The main music
store in Newcastle had a scheme where they would hire you an
instrument for a period and knock the cost of the rental off the price
if you subsequently bought. She tried it for a term, didn't like it
(you need an awful lot of puff) so handed it back and stayed with the
fiddle. I can't remember how much it cost us - less than ukp50 IIRC.

With a name like Music for Schools I'd have expected them to be a
charity offering instruments for free loan to those unable to afford
their own. How wrong can you be!
It seems that registered charity is not the same as charitable.
Indeed! Anyway, I don't know where you live but I'd certainly try
your nearest big store.
Sounds like they're trying to take you up the bugle...

Music for Schools are supplied by Normans, and looking at their range of
clarinets, they don't even to have a £299 spec one, indeed a student
"starter" clarinet being £99 before tax.

A quick web-search seems to suggest that this one will do the trick..
