Health insurance and dirt bikes
|
I thought I'd ask this question while I'm healthy...
Does your health insurance company know about your dirt bike? What if they
did?
|
Probably I throw in my 2ct from a German's point of view:
We have private and governmental health insurance (aka: medicare). Both
cover motorcycle related injuries, no matter if it happend on public roads
or the racetrack (unpremeditated actions assumed) - to the degree that is
stated in the fine-print. That means, as a medicare patient you might not
be able to see the head physician or be put in a private room etc. But
that's more or less the case for every injury/illness/treatment: You get
what you pay for. *)
Then there is accident/casualty insurance. Unless you have explicitly
closed a contract that covers racing, all activities that "pursuit the goal
of reaching top speeds on a closed track" are excluded.
|
If you get hurt on the bike, do you tell the doctor exactly how it happened?
Some people falsify some of that information, I think.
|
If I can at least limp away (no paramedics or ambulance needed), change
clothes and show up in a fairly tidy manner, I usually avoid mentioning the
word "motorcycle" (as well as: "mountainbike", "canyoning" or even "weight
lifting" and "basketball"). Not because of insurance issues but more
because I'm sick of hearing lectures from know-it-all doctors about
dangerous sports, why I didn't wear a helmet (on the MTB, that is), etc.
blahblah and being considered somebody who is used to pain, therefore can
cope with ample amounts of neglect and wait time.

Do insurance companies discriminate against dirtbikers?
|
My 2 boys and I have supplemental insurance just for riding and racing
and all thing "extreem". It says in the policy as long as I'm not
racing for money (under 5k is ok) and I don't race Pro I'm covered.
My regular health insurance dose not cover racing.
|
|
Any dirtbike injury can be explained by saying you got *hit* by a
dirtbike.
|
|
Not that I would know.
Cheers,
Volker
*) The tendency is - surprise, surprise - towards "pay more / get less" and
the insurances trying to "personalize" your insurance contributions by
evaluating the risks you are taking (seems that women are taking higher
risks since they tend to pay more for private insurances). Currently, there
are discussions to have something like that for smokers but I don't see why
this shouldn't happen with people conducting dangerous sports. After all,
it's basically like insuring your car and having a Beetle vs. a Ferrari...
|
Let me also add that here in the UK I am covered regardless of whether
I am riding, racing or hula-hooping. Makes no difference....and there
is no pre-existing clause here either.
Universal Health Care baby!! USA should get some!

I've seen motorcycle racing on the "Do you participate in any of the
races. :-)
Actually, when you're a C-spode at the back of the pack and don't have
the ability to maintain the specified average .. and also, in those
cases when the pros are coming in to the first check 15 minutes
late, ... then in effect, well, 'nuff said.

|
DUDE! Read the fine print. Most health insurance DOES discriminate
against dirt biking. ESPECIALLY RACING! Don't get hurt and don't
tell them what you were doing when you did get hurt.
