I need help
|
Well, this is obviously a true-ism.
But, more specifically, I could really do with someone to help me out
at Mallory Park next Sunday, 18th March. I racing my GSX-R 600 that
|
What time would you be requiring someone?
I've got a wedding to go to on Saturday (inc over-night stay) but I
could get to Mallory around 12 on Sunday.
|
Thanks for the offer, but I really need someone for the whole day.
Practise is in the morning, and to be honest that's when most of the
actual 'work' is.
|
I'd offer, but a combination of being on-call and being stuck in a
docklands datacentre between 7 and 10am kinda rules it out.
How come a mainland race counts towards your six sigs, anyway? I thought
it was island stuff only?

|
Yep.
I was actually amazed how much CPR protocols have changed in the
mumblety-mumble years since I last did any first-aid training.
Apparently it all changed (again) six months ago, so if anyone did their
training before then, it'd be worth checking out the new guidelines.
|
What the man says. Apparently we've been doing it all wrong for years.
The single rescuer compression-to-ventilation ratio is now 30:2
According to PADI.
|
I get re-training every three years from the mountain rescue bods at
and in that time they've also completely removed the hard thump to the
breastbone, on the basis that it never actually had any chance of
succeeding.
Sadly, all these changes just mean that I can't for the life of me
remember what the latest thinking is, so I'd probably go back to 15:5,
which sounds familiar, on the assumption that it's probably 95% as
likely to do the job as the latest 'correct' thinking.

I ought to get back up to speed - been about 9 years...

|
Would have gladly, and wish I could make it along, but am in ze fatherland
and don't come home til' monday 19th evening.
Always liked the breakfasts at Mallory, and the cute marshall with the
ponytail that used wave at me at the hairpin.

Verdi? Eww.

She was a she back then, not that that means much round here .... ;-)

include:
|
OK, you've got a fully fledged race support mechanic at your beck and
call for the day. Danny's not racing next weekend so I'm free to help.
|
- rolling the bike off the stand (as long as I'm holding the bars)
- putting the bike back on the stand.
- helping me change the wheels if the weather is changeable.
In return, I can offer you the glamour and cachet of the paddock at an
average UK race meeting, which will include long periods of standing
around, getting cold, perhaps bored, and wondering what all the fuss
is about. There will be as much tea as you can drink.
Anyone? Please?
|
I'm not too far from Mallory.
Are brains required?
|
Pete Fisher - you did say....
|
I did, but I see that there is already an orderly queue of more
competent assistants.
Might still come along and watch though.
|
Be good to see you. I was talking about your hill climb offer to Pat
and Keith in the last 10 days
|
OK. Just as well Lozzo is available though, as SWMBO's Mother's day
treat will probably involve taking the lad out for the day so that she
can luxuriate for hours at the gym/sauna. About time he saw some circuit
racing for real. He got to see practice and the Saturday races at the TT
a few years ago, but has only seen short circuit action on the box.
BTW have you seen my old clip of Pat in action on Youtube?
|
Finally watched it at home.
Hill climbing doesn't make great TV, does it :-)
|
If you watch the other videos Pete has uploaded the Vincent combo one is
quite funny.

How network support people, who are generally really
helpful, and not at all Nazi like, have finally banned YouTube at work
|
At the risk of being though an unfeeling, nazi-like monster I'd just
like to say:
|
That's ok. I've spent some time on your side of the fence too.
|
|
cos of the sheer amount of bandwidth that was being gobbled up. I'll
|
Like it is here you mean? As is streaming audio - after I discovered
that about 70% of our bandwidth was being taken up by people listening
to the local radio station on-line.
I suspect I might be approaching it from a slightly different
perspective to most though - given that my job depends on our customers
being able to get to our web and ftp sites reliably and quickly..
|
That was the reason given here. They're pretty cool about it, but
said that the network usage go streaming video was compromising out
ability to support our customers.
|
Indeed. I don't have a philosophical objection to it (apart from the
silliness of using a scare resource to listen to a local radio station
when you can get a perfectly good radio at Asda for £5.99) but my boss
does..
|
|
|
Does your network run entirely on non-duplex circuits then? Somehow,
people chewing 70% of your inbound bandwidth are causing issues with
outbound traffic?
|
It doesn't. What makes you think people are only downloading stuff from
our ftp site?
|
|
|
have to watch it when I get home.
|
Or try an anonymous Web proxy server, like http://www8.cooltunnel.com
|

|
|
|
You don't mention kick off times?
|
|
Ackshewally, that sounds like fun. I haven't been to Mallory for
aaaages. Knowing approx. start/end times would be good.
Would I get a stopwatch/lapboard to play with? Scantily clad pit birds,
or do I have to bring my own?
