Ooops.....

It seems my 'Zero maintenance' program has a flaw or two in it. A mate
was so disgusted with the state of the Aprilia, he took it away to clean
it.....I didn't realise that when he cleans something, he pulls it apart
as he goes! He took the back wheel off to get access to parts of the
swingarm no-one will ever see, but he wants it clean anyway.......here
is what he sent to the Kiwibiker forum.......

"Well tonight was time to get into the beast & start to pull it to bits.
Once the back wheel came out the first drama was found . 42 tooth sprocket
with 20 teeth missing just after a 5000k South Island trip last week '
Hmmm, you have to take the rear wheel off to see the front sproket?

Glad to know I am not the only one out there with the same attitude towards
maintenance. But, I own a Honda.
It was the rear sprocket with the missing teeth, I can't believe I
didn't notice when i oiled the chain!......since he's posted pics to the
Kiwibiker site, I'm going to be getting some stick from strangers on
every 'away' ride I go on!

Scary' to say the least pics below , oil tank mount broken / water pump
leaking / altenator loose / brake mount peddle had one bolt missing other
one held in by spring in front of it / Rear brake resesvor had sucked the
No reason to not get a Harley now, Brian! ;)
I had a bad experience with an old 1200 Sportster, but people keep
telling me they have improved a lot in the last few years. I'm saving my
Harley experience for when I can't bend my bad leg enough to get on a
Sportsbike.......then I'll get something with floorboards (and chilled
panniers for the beer!)

rubber seal boot down into it blocking the hole so no back brake which i
found out last night when taking it home . While there drained & replaced
the fluid & all sorted . Belly pan of & then tank up K/N filter out & clean
out oil from in side & servise K/N with cleaner kit . Went over all Rad
hoses etc as well as allen keys which all needed abit of a turn . Tomorrow
new sprocket grease wheel cush drives & wheel then reinstate then move to
Unless the bike has a 42 tooth countershaft sprocket, I
think he's referring to the rear unit. However, I just can't
see how one could overlook a near 50% tooth loss.
It was more of a 'neverlook' than an 'overlook'....apparently it was a
light alloy racing sprocket that was never designed for 1000's of km's
of road use.
After being really fussy with my last two Italian bikes, and having them
break down anyway, I decided early on I would treat the Aprilia with
no respect and see what happens......and see, it breaks, but I haven't
wasted any time on it.

Bestest most maintenance free bike Iv'e owned was a shaft drive Katana
650.....a pity it didn't handle the impact into the side of the car!
Check the web for trailer dwellers. 50% tooth loss is apparently a "must
have" :)

the front to do wheel / brakes & fluid plus clutch fluid . ."
Your bike was fine until your buddy decided to clean it.
Exactly.....and who needs a rear brake anyway?
No new chain? I can't imagine the original being in tip top nick.
