FOAK: Knees
|
Over the last week I've developed a pain in my left knee. I can only
imagine it's through karate or the gym but I spose it could've been
caused by many things as I don't remember a specific event prior to the
pain.
It seems to be getting worse and is currently covered in Voltarol Gel
and supported in a tube sock. Moving my leg in a natural forward back
motion is no problem but the slightest movement to the side and I'm in
|
OTOH, I had a medial meniscus job done a couple of years ago now. No
swelling at all, no real pain unless I moved my knee wrong but a scan
showed it was almost torn in half and the subsequent "keyhole" surgery
turned out to be 2 small incisions each side of the knee and a 2 inch
cut across to get the bits out :-/
Full recovery wasn't a few days. I was using crutches for a couple of
days and left it about a month before going back to work (I have a
fairly active job, I don't sit around, I also need to kneel quite a
bit).

trouble.
|
ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) - a lot of NFL players get that injury
and talk about it in similar terms.
|
Aha, that'll be it. I was playing wide receiver for the Chicago Bulls
last week.
|
No - I can think of a few connections with bull for you but none of
them are playing basketball[1]..
Phil.
[1] The Chicago NFL team is the Chicago Bears..

|
Heh.
So have you seen the doctor yet? I await confirmation of my 'cartilage
damage' diagnosis.
|
|
|
Any thoughts?
|
Have you dislocated the kneecap at any time?
I used to do this with monotonous regularity with my right kneecap, but
for some reason it stopped dislocating about 10 years ago. I used to get
similar symptoms to yours after a dislocation.
|
|
You're middle aged. Get used to this sort of thing.

You are my wife AICMFF Decree Niseis [sp]
That's what she said... almost to the word!

Sounds like the classic skiing injury.
|
Also a classic 'kicking' injury suffered by footballers, rugby players,
cricketers and people involed in martial arts. One foot stays planted
while the rest of the body moves. Just spoken to my Dad who has
confirmed possible Cruciate ligament damage and given me a series of
exercices and treatments I can do at home.
|
Have accidentally been skiing, and not noticed? Easily done.
|
Weird. I had a skiing dream last night despite not having been in over
10 years.

Cruciate ligament damage? [1]
|
Very unlikely that you could damage one without noticing[1], plus the
symptoms are all wrong - the acl/pcl only come into play to aid
stability if the knee is bent beyond its normal parameters.
|
This could still happen in karate. Any other ideas?
|
[1] i.e. twisting the knee _way_ out of line and suffering lots of
pain in so doing.
|
Karate would be the most likely culprit but you're right, I don't
remember a specific moment.
|
|
[1] Aren't I the little ray of sunshine?
|
|
Catilage damage? See you doc... Knees, you don't really wannabe
without them... See your doc before it gets worse, don't suffer, as I
did for 6 months, before having the op...
Good luck with it, hopefully it's nothing serious...
|
|
You run don't you?
In which case, get yourself to a doc and get a referral to someone who
knows what they're talking about sharpish. Knee injuries only get
worse if incorrectly diagnosed.
|
He'll just pump you full of bovine steroids
|
heh, he's old school, he makes them train for the event.

I recently have/had a similar type of thing, I believed it tobe a loose
piece of crud from the kneecap which I damaged in the '80s. An examination &
x-ray failed to show anything other than some arthritis in the joint.
They all do that Sir.
After a couple of months it disappeared overnight. So I still believe it was
caused by crud which could drift into the joint again at anytime. Of course
this minor agravation is no reason to use a much more expensive scan to id
the problem. Perhaps if I were foreign...
