More shovel starter questions

Drinks on my tab Shirley - take extra good care of the old skinny guy in the
corner.

Question is - does the starter solenoid have to fully engage to energize the
starter motor?

Just installed a missing ($7.50) thrust washer on the jackshaft of my
starter that seems to have cured it of not fully engaging the teeth on the
ring gear, but now all I get is a click from the solenoid with the start
button. the starter will spin if I apply power to it but not from the start
switch.

Could the (possibly) reduced 1/8 in. of travel in the solenoid have caused
this or am I just chasing another wiring demon?
Take a small screwdriver and short between the small terminal on the
solonoid and the battery terminal. If the starter spins, I'd vote for
the wiring.
It's early, if that ain't clear instructions, gimme a call.
Chuck and I disgusted that last night . The solenoid pulls in , the drive
gear engages the ring . And if he shorts between the power terminals on the
solenoid with something it turns over . Sounds like the washer isn't making
contact with the terminals inside . The real question is "why" ...
I think I have a solonoid repair kit sitting on the shelf out in the
shop. I may even have another solonoid.
You're welcome to either, Chuck.

BTB, Snag, you do know that next week is "first Saturday", right?
Yup , I sure do - you realize it's also Easter ? Got a removable cast now ,
a two week pass from work , and the doc's permission to ride , as long as I
don't have to jam the front brake on too hard . He said I need the brace on
as much as I can , but for all practical matters it's mostly healed .
Doc that looked at my hand must ride , he wanted to buy my bike ...
Nope, forgot about that. All my grandkids are too far away for us to
have to deal with it. I'll think of you whilst I'm eating.
As irritated as we are with all our kids right now , there's a chance you'll
be looking across the table at me . Gotta disgust it with the wife . You
*know* I wanna be there .
Those things arc every time you start em. They get a little pitted and
burned after a while. You should be able to take the solenoid apart clean
the contacts with a file or wire wheel. Turn over the copper washer and get
a lot more life out of it.

Have Fun
