Thoughts on Vibration dampers
|
To all,
Greetings to bar once again. Looking for some input on a solution to
vibration problem on my bike. (lol, now there's a subject never
discussed in this forum).
About a year or so back, did a major overhaul/rebuild of my '89
Springer, to include getting rid of the Springer in favor of a
wide-glide style front end, and some motor work (Port/polished the
head and manifold/flowbenched, tuned exhausts, etc). Also new wheels,
new bars, fenders etc.
Well, with the increase in HP (about a +22 at the rear wheel kick in
the pants) has come a lot of vibration from the engine through to the
bars, which was never there in the 10 previous years I owned the bike.
Have lived with it for a while, but now have decided I want to try to
tone it down and/or rid myself of it if possible.
Looking here and there I have come across two different Torsional
Vibration Dampers, one in the latest J&P catalog, and another complete
unit from an outfit called Fisher Concepts.

Snake oil. External balancers just flat "Don't Work" Save your money.
Little late, but the hot ticket on the older Softails is to balance
the flywheels at 57% instead of the factory recommended 60%.
Did you try loosening up the primary chain a bit?

Understand the basic concepts, and dont mind putting out the $$$ IF
the products do what they claim. So, drinks on me for the rest of the
evening to anyone who has had any experiences or comments about these
products.
Bartender, and shot of Patron for me.....

Check your motor mounts and make sure they're all tight like they're supposed to be.
If they are then tear it down and have it professionally balanced and trued. You got
something wrong and power ain't causing it. Those vibration dampeners from Fisher don't
work.

Roger,
Thanks for the reply; I'll check into that. The lower end wasnt messed
with or removed during the rework, only the top end, so noone messed
with the original torque of the mounts. But, it never hurts to look,

I thought your original post said "major" overhaul? A top end job doesn't really constitute
a major overhaul but there is a top motor mount up there somewhere that had to be removed
and reinstalled I'm sure.
