OT: Cage gearbox/final drive FOAK

My trusty 15 year old diesel Clio is starting to make loud rumbling
noises. Louder with speed, independant of gear or clutch in/out.
Initially it sounded like a wheel bearing - quiet around right hand
bends, noisy around left. Aha I thought, nsf wheel bearing. However,
CV joint? Does it click on full lock?

it's not that. (After I changed it, I realised I had not long ago
replaced that one - d'oh). It seems to be coming from the right(ish)
side of the car. Right front wheel sounds ok when I spin it, no play or
rumbling evident.

Could it be a bearing in the gearbox/diff/final drive? Could that go
loud/quiet depending on the direction of the car? Or could it be the
right hand wheel bearing? What do the FOAK think? Last time I a noise
like it, it -was- the left front wheel bearing, replaced it and it was
quiet again.

Thinking about it a bit more, I guess it could be the wheel bearing as
they are a double race type. Could be the left hand race?

I would just replace it to find out, but they are 50 quid a pop, plus
paying the man with the bearing press.

It would be nice to find a use for my newly acquired 7.99 air chisel
from Aldi, but I don't think this is the right application.
