European Breakdown Cover for Older Vehicles
|
I want to take the FJ into eastern Europe later in the year for a
couple of weeks but, having checked the policy, find it won't be

Where are you thinking of going?

I've checked my usual providers. They all have between 10 to 16 year
limits. Ebike 10, Green Flag 16, quotelinedirect 15.

Thanks. That pretty much ties in with what I've found so far. After a
bit of digging I did see a statement to the effect that the RAC will
cover vehicles older than 10 years for an additional premium so I'll
give them a call to see how old 'older' can be.

Also check the territorial limits carefully. When I went to Croatia my then
underwriter, Europ Assistance, only covered as far as Slovenia. I didn't
really worry about this as I was only visiting the northern part of
Croatia. I imagine the cost of hiring a man with a van to take me & the
bike to the Slovenian border would've been fairly cheap. Others in my group
had cover for Croatia, as a ZZR1100 rider found when his front wheel
bearing broke. That was the RAC IIRC.

The plan is to meet in Germany then head through the Czech Republic,
Slovakia, Romania (1) for three nights, back through Slovakia then into
Austria, Germany and France. They're all EU countries.
The FJ has standard wheels thus an unusual tyre size for modern bikes
which may make them difficult to get so I'm going to stash a front and
rear in my garage and get someone to courier one out to me if I need it
so at least I should have that bit covered even if it costs me a couple
of days. I did wonder about putting some Ultraseal or similar in but
whenever I've talked to tyre fitters about it they've always advised
against it although I have a suspicion there may be an element of MRDA
about that.
(1) I'm told tourism is less developed than the pot holes and a sense
of humour will be required!

covered by my RAC European breakdown cover as the bike is too old. I
could take the Hayabusa but given the reported state of the roads I
think the FJ will be more comfortable.
I'm not expecting any issues as the bike has only done around 6.5k
miles but better safe than sorry. I'm obviously going to have to ring
round a few suppliers but, to give me a head start, do you know of
anyone providing European breakdown cover for older vehicles?
(X-posted to UKRM and UKRM.Classic if I've set this up correctly)
