Best cheap tyres
The tyres on the VFR are a bit shagadelic (esp the back), and there's an MOT
in the offing. What are the cheapest tyres I can get that will fit?
Remoulds? Part-worn? They won't get leaned over much, and don't need to be
too grippy, as I'm inured to crashing and ride really slowly in the wet.
I've never been one to buy cheap tyres, so have a play on
Coo, lots of cheap stuff.
They give a good idea of price. So far, I've managed to haggle with local
outfits to get similar prices.
Then phone Protyre on Bristol Road and haggle.
I've had a lot of tyres from Protyre, Gloucester branch more recently as I
was working up there.
They seem to have taken over the baton from that place in Kingsholm as the
best outfit on Glarsturr.
Probably too dear for you, but I found the Pirelli sports touring Dragon
GTS were well suited to the VFR.
It's got Diablos on atm. I was considering Diablo Stradas or Azaro IIIs.
A brief look on ebay shows some Diablo Corsas for =A3139/pr:

I CBA to keep looking past the 1st result, but I'm sure there will be
some standard diablos there somewhere.=20

It seems the Stradas are what they call the GTS now.

Avon AM51 and AM52 were good and cheap.
Here's a nice tyre list thingy, with pictures too...
BT45s are good and cheap. Only a parsimonious fool would fit them to a
sportsbike, though.
150 quid buys a pair of Avon AV45/46, which last forever and grip.
Well, not according to Bonners.
From you, I was expecting to hear the praises of Maxxis/Cheng Shin's
finest.
The Maxxis Barracuda is about the best small bike tyre I have ever used,
but I don't hear such good reports about the radials. They don't grip as
well as 020s, and last only half as long. So for the same money I'd
rather have a known quantity like the Avons.
What are these Shinko things like?
I didn't get where I am today by taking people on an overflight of
Whoosh City, Arizona.
What about Whoosh City, California?
I don't bother with them, false economy and all that. I know the Maxxis
will do nicely on small bikes and they're dirt cheap, so why spend a
couple of quid less to visit ditches every day.
Cheap and unheard of brands of tyres really aren't worth the bother
unless you have a 30mph scooter. As it is, you have a 100bhp 750 on
which your daughter sometimes rides pillion. Have some regard for her
safety if not your own, buy a proper pair of tyres and leave the
pikeyness to someone else.
THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, I was thinking of going for Speedmasters, but they don't seem to do
them in the right size. What about these Tomahawk remoulds in the different
colours, they're quite cheap, aren't they? I might be able to get a pair in
red to match the bike, or a blue front and red rear to fool people into
thinking I'm travelling at c-fractional speeds. Would mis-matched tyre
colours be a problem for the MOT?
I'll stop taking you seriously if you keep this up.

I had a Maxxis Barracuda on my old GT750 tourer, and the Z650 has a
Cheng Shin on the back. Both score highly in the performance/grip/cash
equation. In fact, I reckon the Cheng Shin is better than the old Avon
Roadrunners, Dunlop TT100s or Pirelli Phantoms that we would have
selected as the tyre of choice back in the 1970s.
Believe it or not some of the folks on the Concours (ZG1000) list are
rating them. But they're well known for being a frugal and contrarian
bunch.
