energy used riding

According to the diet software I'm using, my daily commute by bike (
about 2.5 hours there and back) uses about 400 Kcalories..seems like a
suprising amount doesn't it. Probably why I feel so tired today!
I think I used a few more than that in my 1.5 hour ride yesterday!
Does it know you've got an engine on your bike ?
The excercise related calories are supposedly in addition to normal
metabolic rate, so I think I'll have to ride more often! Driving the
car, it rekons, only uses 122 [C|Kc]alories . It a bit of a general
guesstimate I guess, but it's a heavy bike :)
what software is this? it isn't in mine :o(
Yes, I wondered about that when I was using fitday. I came to the
conclusion it's bollox. No matter how closely I monitored my food
intake, the weight loss didn't match what the energy expenditure said it
should be (even allowing for some errors). At the end of the day I
simply used it as a diary and a bit of a filip when things were flagging.
Taking a daily average energy consumption of 2500 for an adult male,
spread evenly over 24 hours (not exactly scientific, but for fag-packet
calculations it'll do). That gives 105 calories per hour without any
specific additional activity. Compared with the 80 per hour you're
managing on the bike, it seems surprisingly low.
Your figures are way out, did you calculate them on a fag packet?
Which bit of "not exactly scientific, but for fag-packet calculations
it'll do" did you not understand?

Sitting, eating a donut will use approx 250 cals per hour.
Jogging will use approx 300 cals per hour.
ITYF that's more like 600 [1]per hour (although we are about to enter
one of the great estimates of our time). 600 on top of your normal
metabolic rate that is.
Can't be arsed to put the exact numbers in, but I typically run 3
miles 4 times a week.
Really, my treadmill reads that after 30 minutes.
And according to his s/ware, riding a motorcycle uses 80 cals per hour.
So he'd be better off sitting on the sofa, whether watching Jeremy Kyle
or eating a donut as you'd prefer.
Can I be riding a bike or watching Kylie [1] instead.

Paul.

[1] With the sound down, obviously.

Wait, you were trying to agree with me, right?

Try wriggling around in your seat a bit, looks like you'd burn more
calories spending 5 hours on your sofa watching Jeremy Kyle.
Surely the 400KCals == 400,000 Calories ?
Yes. And "calorie" is the colloquial term for kilocalorie. If somethone
refers to a bag of crisps having about 200 calories, they really mean
kilocalories, as one real calorie is a tiny tiny amount of energy
(enough to raise the temperature of 1cc of water by one degree Kelvin,
iirc.)
Just Kelvin, not "degree Kelvin"
Yeah, I realised that just after posting. So lets just pretend I'm Amish
and the 13th General Conference on Weights and Measures of 1968 never
happened, and everyone's a winner.
... except the Amish.
Heh. I just eat and drink what I want... I didn't know about that.
Doesn't work. I put a load of crisps into a cup of water and it's still
cold.
Try Flamin' Hot Monster Munch.
I bow to your almost infinite knowledge of junk food related science.
