Tyres and cheap cola

Why are some tyres marked in imperial sizes when most are metric? The
Virago's front tyre is 3.00x19 and I'm wondering if there's a standard
metric equivalent.

There is but I can't remember it, which probably isn't helpful. :-)
I used to have Pirelli MT-something-or-other when I owned an XV535 which
seemed to get me round corners well enough. The pegs would hit down before
the tyres were anywhere near losing grip, any lower and I'd have needed
shoulder sliders.
Ah, I've just found some old pictures and the front tyre was a Pirelli MT65.
Can't see the exact size though.

ITYF that is a crossply tyre.

Their fitment guide lists the 3x19 as the correct size but does not have
any recommendations from the range. Erk!
Michelin is more helpful and lists the Commander as the recommended fit.

In the cage world a metric width shows that it's a radial, an imperial
width shows it's a crossply.

...Doesn't *have* to have a crossply though, does it?

Having just searched the web for "XV535 tyres" it appears to be the default
fitment. Perhaps unusually, the standard fit rear is a radial. If
that's what the web says, it must be OK.

No it does not need to be a cross-ply. I've had a bike where the front was
a cross ply and the rear a radial even with a matched pair: Michelin T66
for a Honda Dominator.
If you look up the Michelin tyre I listed both fromt & rear are cross-ply.
A tyre designation such as your rear, 140/90 - 15 M/C 76 H REINF TL/TT,
would only indicate a radial if there was an R where the hyphen is i.e.
before the 15.
Adrian's comment is erroneous, as far as bikes go.

Also - Tesco value cola is an excellent fuel tank de-ruster and brings
corroded aluminium up a treat too. If only matey had left the tank

Indeed. The inside of the tank is now pristine. Now to clean out the
carbs...

completely full instead of just 2/3. Old petrol smells 'orrible.
