125 Reliability

I'm new to the group, and don't have a bike yet. I'm doing my CBT next
month with a view to doing the tests and getting hold of something
around 400cc ASAP. Once I've done CBT, I expect I'll get a 125 straight
away and would be keen to use it for my daily commute... if it can be
trusted.

I must admit to being totally green on most bike-related things, and
have no idea what the reliability of 125s is like these days. My
question is, given a decent bike to start with and regular servicing,
could you trust a 125 to do a 15-20 mile each way commute several times
per week?
I can't think of a reason why not.
A Honda CG125 will outlast your endurance and your patience.
my endurance and/or patience for a CG125 would be about 20 minutes.

I mean, I used to ride one when I was learning, but I wouldn't want to
actually go anywhere on one.
Fair comment, but you haven't actually run a CG125 have you? I've done
You don't need to 'run' one to know they're a boring as it gets.
Yes, for 3 months - though as soon as I passed my test, I got a proper
bike.
The sort of thing OP wants to do, yes.

22000 miles on my one, and it's proved to be an ideal commuter tool.
Like I said, boring.

Frugal on fuel too, which is important when commuting, as a tank full
lasts for about 200+ miles.
Boring.
that tank on my R65LS lasts for 200+ miles too, so what?
That's a bit too tangental to give a proper answer to.
I was simply[1] pointing out that you can have a 200+ mile tank range
on a bike that isn't completely and utterly boring.
Point taken, but that's no good, it's not a 125.

[1] not simply enough, as it turns out.

The OP needs something that's at least interesting, say a DT125X.
Nickable, as in lots of interest from theives and expensive on the

insurance too. Although that's an assumption on my part, OP may not mind
paying through the nose for a nickable bike.
Used to do it every day on a POS MTX125
AFAIK CG125s (MSOHP) go on for approximately forever, but they were too
small for me.
I had a Suzuki GS125ES for a few months between CBT & buying my first post-
test bike. It would be fine for a 15-20 mile commute unless it involved a
motorway. I made regular trips along the A40 from Ross to Gloucester on it.

If you are tall then one of the trail bikes might suit you better. They are
also much better urban bikes as a) the higher seat gives much better
visibility and b) short cuts via pavements/grass/steps are options.
