OT: For them wot 'as big tellys..

Tellybox will need replacing later in the year, and I'm looking at
replacements, probably a 32 or 37 inch LCD.. but things seem to have
moved on a bit tech-wise. So a couple of questions if I may.

What if anything makes use of the 1080p format right now?
Games consoles , and Blu-Ray or HD-DVD players.

Surely 720p & 1080i are all that anyone really needs for skyHD and the
like? What's the point in paying a premium for 1080p?
The Sharp Aquos 32 we have is 1080i and is amazing.
1080i will look better on a 1080p screen than scaled onto a 720p one
HD DVDs use it. You may in any case find that, if you're wanting the
sort of response times and contrast you're used to with your current
CRT, you'll already be looking at the top end.
I bought one of these:

and one of these:

Happy I am.
Go for at least a 37".
OK. I don't think I want to go any bigger TBH, the living room is long
but narrow so the wall it's going on is only 11 feet from the sofa...
anything bigger would be too overpowering, I think.
11 feet... 3 and a bit meters. A 37" 1080p screen would be perfect. If
you want it to look less... encroaching... then get one with the
speakers underneath rather than at the sides.

It will look a bit big at first, but after a week or so you'll barely
notice, and after a month you'll start to wonder whether you could have
got a bigger one.
I'm just wondering whether to go to a 47" LCD. The hardest part about
the decision is what to do with my current 32". The obvious choice is
my bedroom - but the snob in me says that TVs in the bedroom are
dreadfully non-U.
Using the terms U and non-U is dreadfully non-U nowadays, you know.
therein lies the humour. anyway, what's for tea?
Still honey, you oaf.
Beans on toast on a paper plate.
me too
hey, at least I've got an excuse for minimising washing up.
Me too; I don't like it.
Who does?
I hate paper plates - they absolutely destroy the dishwasher
You could get one of those life-art DVDs, y'know "fish tank", "roaring
fire", "view from alpine cottage window".
Depends where the CCTV camera feeding it is pointing.

1080p vs 720p on a 32 or 37 inch screen doesn't make _that_ much
difference in TV viewing quality, but...

Most 720p screens are actually 1366x768 (because that's some dumb
computer resolution) and will scale everything you play on them, even
their 'native' 720p stuff.

All 1080p screens are 1620x1080, and will not have to scale their

I meant '9' obviously.

native resolution (which is what will be broadcast and on HD video
discs), and will look /better/ (less fuzzy) when scaling 720p and
normal TV because the scaling chunks are a better fit.
Cool, that rules out the nice looking and fairly cheap Samsung one I'd
spotted, but there seem to be a few other suitable options.. I'll have
to start looking into the various brands a bit more.

Thanks for the info.

Also, if you plus a games console into it, 1080p is much better than
720p for text.

Basicly, except for some rare TVs that are true 720p, there is no
situation in which a 1080p screen will not be measurably better than a
so-called 720p. On the other hand, you probably wouldn't notice it much.
