Removing Outer Fairing?
|
First, a round of liquid refreshment for all.
I have a rattle in my 2002 FLHTC and think I've isolated to something
inside the fairing, (this isn't the point of the story, so keep
reading).
I've never opened up the fairing before, but I have the Service Manual
and I'm pretty comfortable wrenching, so it seemed very straight
forward.
|
I don't have anything to offer, but I've had mine off my '95 a bunch of
times. You should try getting one of *those* off. It helps to have
midget-sized hands.
|
My '76 is a snap . Four quarter inch bolts and it's off . Of coarse , it
doesn't usually have to come off , cuz it's got no innards like y'alls newer
poser bikes . Though sometimes it's necessary to loosen a few other bolts
and tilt it forward , like to replace one of the upper bracket/nacelle bolts
. Wouldn't have had to do even that , but the bolt was busted off in the
hole .
Cured that rattle that was drivin' me nuts last weekend too ...

The manual says to remove six screws:
Three Phillips heads from the windshield, (no prob)
Two torx from the inside of the fairing, (no prob, they're right
there),
Then, it says to remove to remove two more torx, but it isn't clear
where they are.
|
Is this a jucking foke? OK, the mysterious missing screws (6 and 7) are
in front of the gas tank (turn the bars to get at 'em easier). Be
careful not to drop one.
|
I said I was new to FL models.
I have the Service manual, and got a little mixed up.
Gimme a break.
|
I did. Did I not answer your question enough for you to find the screws?
If not, get the parts manual too (buy it either way).

I looked high and low, but since I'm still a little new to FL models,
(always rode cruisers), I couldn't find them.
I figure, I bought Service Manual, I gave it the old college try, so
I'd go ahead and ask for a little advice. I'm sure there are a bunch
of folks here with Touring bikes who've removed the outer fairing lots
of times.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
