This might be darcying but...

... what is on the market in the way of lardy ole tourers that my stumpy
little legs could cope with.
A trike made out of a Bedford van.
The idea has merit but I have a need for speed that I don't quite think
that would fill. Next year perhaps, or the year after but I have some
solar charging stuff I need to play with first.

I am thinking of a comfy mile cruncher with a lot of carrying capacity
and while I would be inclined choose a cruiser for the role I dunno
about visiting the frozen norf or places like that without a bit of
ZZR1100 is low & very nice. Get some bar risers.

weather protection.
Isn't WUN trying to punt out the Voyager?
FJ1200 ;)
Wot e sed.

I'm 29" inside leg and can flat foot the FJ12

You should be able to pick up a half decent example with luggage for
around a grand.

In fact:
item # 200146012781 bit of a shed, buy it now £650
Would you buy a bike from a bloke who can't spell 'winter' (or many other
words, for that matter)?

300145989269 - no luggage

There are 8 on ebay at present.
I was going to say the same thing. Excellent and comfortable mile munchers
with loads of torque but not so much weather protection as a 'proper'
tourer.

of the blokes in the FJOC has one that has done 93k and he reports it is
still running sweetly.
I've had 5 pre-'91 FJs (admittedly none of them for more than a year but
for the first four they were relatively high mileage years), never had the
problems you describe and haven't seen them reported on the FJOC web site.
I'm not saying you are wrong, just that I haven't experienced it nor seen
I suppose you could web-search it... Oh look, I've done it for you:
=20&sa=N
You did, thanks.

I've read quite a few of the links and there a few reports by people with
second gear problems so it obviously does exist; thanks for the
information. However, there aren't that many and it seems to affect the
86-88 bikes.

uncommon to find an FJ1100 or 1200 or any other bike with large, heavy
transmission gears like the CB1000, Kaw 1000 or older Suz 1000's that will
pop out of second gear, especially ones with a fair amount of miles.

It's caused by the rider shifting from first to second and applying power
before the shift mechanism can finish engaging the gear engagement "dogs"
into the other gear's "slots". The power applied kicks the gears apart,
rounds the engagement dog edges and bends the shift fork. Every time a
shift is missed, the fork bends a bit more, and the gears get a bit more
rounded - eventually, the transmission will pop out of second gear at full
throttle, no matter how you shift." which suggests this is not just
limited to FJs.

I'm curious now so I'm off to ask on the FJOC forum if people there have
IIRC, it may have been the pre '88 models and FJ1100s. There was a
modified gear after that.
Responses on the FJOC forum indicate this problem did indeed affect the
FJ11 and some early FJ12s - model 1TX (I had one of those - red and
white, definitely the best colour) - and that many of the issues were
resolved with a warranty recall.

experienced it.

it reported. Many people believe the 3CV, which pre-dates the '91 3XW, is
the best model (you're going to tell me now that you have experienced the
problem and point me to several posts on the subject aren't you...!)
Changing the wheels for ones of different sizes seems to be a popular mod.
I run Avon Azaros on standard wheels and I've been very happy with them. I
have lowers on mine (well, I will have when they're back from the paint
shop) and they seem to come up on eBay or the FJOC site on occasion.
