shifter pawl spring replacement

Grab a round on me and hopefully you can help, if not, have one anyhow.

I am replacing the main drive gear in my 1993 FXDWG (hope Noobs' is
holding). I want to replace the shifter pawl assembly (springs, maybe
the pawl and plate). The manual states that the pin that holds the
pawl and springs to the shifter shaft is a "press fit." Is there a
technique to supporting the shifter shaft to get the pin out and then
back in? I don't want to screw up the new parts or bend the shifter
shaft assembly taking it apart.
In my experience, it's usually a pain in the ass, and it's
real easy to bend the shaft. It's much easier, and barely more
expensive, to just replace the whole assembly.
It looks like a pain in the ass but the dealer does not sell a complete
assembly. Do you know who does? And will you let me know?
The dealer certainly should (whole shifter with pawl, springs,
etc). At least, that's how it was last time I saw it...I could be
wrong.
Thanks Phil. The problem was that the my dealer and none in the
country that we checked had all the parts in stock. I did find out
that HD does not sell a complete assembly but it does sell the shift
shaft with the pin and spring assembled ($45).

What I did after doing some searching is purchase the Sputhe
Engineering Posi Shift kit that is a complete assembly with their posi
shift part. I got the entire unit including delivery for $86 directly
from Sputhe, which is an excellent price from what I could find ($99
everywhere else not including delivery).

It seems that the Posi Shift will eliminate those annoying mis-shifts
when getting on it hard. I can't wait to see if it works. From what I
could find on the 'net and speaking to the HD techs, it is an excellent
product and does work great.
Well, ya beat me to it. I was gonna suggest you get a Sputhe
Posi-shifter to eliminate those pesky false neutrals between gears,
while you were at it. I picked mine up off of e-bay for 50 bucks (new)
so you didn't do too bad either.

If you *really* wanna go nuts, get the..... hmm, is it Baker? shift
drum. Baker or Sputhe, CRS, but it is supposed to also eliminate the
false N's too. A bud of mine put the drum in his Evo 5-spd and he
swears by it. Says it's like night-n-day. The big advantage with the
posi-shifter over the shift drum is, with just replacing the drum you
(can) still get the dreaded broken shifter pawl springs. No more false
Neutrals with the drum, but still the chance of a broken shifter spring
(which can *REALLY* fug up yer trans). With the Sputhe posi-shifter,
you eliminate both problems at one time.

Doing both will make your tranny shift like buttah. And it's one of
those... "while yer in there" kind'a deals.

Thanks Preacher. I hope to receive it by Thursday and get ridin' by
next weekend. I didn't know about the drum until after ordering the
Posi-Shift. My intention was/is to replace the springs so the
Posi-Shift meets my needs better and I get the upgrade, can't wait to
use it. I also heard the drum is about $150 (already tapped). I tried
to find the Posi-Shift on ebay and other auction sites but none around
at this time.

Ride safe //Hunter

Thanks again, have another round on me.

Have another round on me and enjoy.
Don't know about the pin but make sure to round off the area where the
springs contacts the arm. The spring can cut itself off over time on the
sharp edge.
Sounds like good advice. I'll file it smooth.
