Ring gear or Drive?

About half the time when I push the starter button , the starter grinds
instead of engaging . From looking at the parts book , it appears either the
ring gear or starter drive gear needs attention . I know the drive gear is
replaceable , btdt on other bikes . Is there a "usual failure mode" on this
assembly ?
Are replacement ring gears available ? Or do I need to replace the whole
assembly ? I have an '88 Sportster hub with trashed magnets , would anyone
happen to know if the ring gears are the same ? Sure would save me some
money if they are (and it's the ring gear that's bad ) .

If the drive is grinding it sounds like it's rotating, so it may be that the
starter solenoid isn't pushing the drive into the ring gear. Or the linkage
for the starter drive is worn / binding.

P.S. The Sposrtster part is not the same, and all the OEM ring gears that
I've ever seen are welded on.

The only replacements that I've seen have been from JP Cycles.

Exactly what I wanted to know ! Not cheap , but beats replacing the whole

I may be way off base but if the new fangled bikes are like the old fangled
ones, I'd take a closer look at the solinoid and jack shaft/bendix first.
Both are weaker than the ring gear. Which BTW is a real pain in the ass to
rivet. If yoy're down to the clutch basket already you should be able to
inspect it pretty good. A little detal mirror or a mechanics mirror work
good for the back side of the ring. HTH and if not it was free. 8^)

I'll be looking it over tomorrow . Been studyin' the parts book and the
service manual , I should be able to check it by pulling the primary cover .
This one ain't like my shovel was ...

What , and pierce a hole in my chrome cover ? Actually , the solenoid is
fine .

Just got checking , the basket assy is available from Jireh for about 35
bucks more . Still a bunch cheaper than OEM .

If JP's has them... somebody makes them for JP's to sell, although I've
never bothered to try and find out who.
