TC tensioning shoes

Shirley get these fine folks what they like.
Well im getting ready to take off my exhaust because of a leak some
where. (backfiring when letting off). So I was going to take the cam
cover off and see what my primary chain tensioning shoe looks like. And
try to see if I can see the secondary one, which it don't look like I
can.Trying to do this without removing cams,Which I never done before.

If you have an '01 twinkie, you should pull the cams and inspect them.
There are surface hardness issues with that year's stock cams. web-search
r.m.h, a.b.p.m.h, and search through Preacher's list if you want to see
how bad it is. While yer inspecting the cams, you can check yer inner
shoe too ;-P

I do remember Preacher telling us about the cams. I didn't follow it to close as to
what years or built date.

Ya gotta remove the pushrods to get the cam/cam plate out, but, IIRC,
two special tools are needed to pull the cam plate. One is a cam gear
lock (plastic/delrin block that keeps the gears from moving while you
remove or torque the bolts holding the gears on). The other is an
tensioner shoe unloader. You can make the tensioner shoe tool out of
an old socket.

Im just trying to get a feel of what needs to be done and what I need to have to do
the job right. This is the first time for me and I don't know if my brain and hands
can get together for this task. So far it don't look to hard. Just wish I had
someone to look over my shoulders so to what im doing.

It doesn't look like I can see the inter shoe without doing so from what
I see in the part and service manuals. Is there anything else I should
look for while Im in there.
Has anyone have them fail on the road?
