dual exhaust kit

i have an 03 ultra classic, wondering if those inexpensive cross over pipe
plugs kits to make my stock exhaust more of a true dual exhause is a good
idea? anything that seems to good to be true usually is!
I've wanted to do the same on my '02 Ultra Classic, mainly to reduce the
amount of heat that comes off the crossover section area. I don't know
about yours, but on mine ... if I get caught in stop and go traffic on a hot
day it starts to burn the inner thigh of my right leg after a while.
That heat seems to be more prolific on EFI models than carbed. I don't
think the crossover is the heat source.
I agree - on my '03 FLSTCI it was the oil tank. Switching to VH Big Shots
(with crossover) didn't help the hot right thigh problem, but remapping the
ECU to a less ridiculous air/fuel ratio did, and adding an oil cooler helped
even more. Took my oil tank temperature down from a consistent 260 to a
190-200.

You can buy Vance and Hines true dual pipes pretty reasonable on ebay. At

least reasonable compared to what retailers want for them. Put 'em on with
whatever mufflers you want.
I've wanted eliminate the crossover by going to a true, dual exhaust to
reduce the extra heat that emits from the crossover section. I haven't yet
because I am concerned that doing so may screw up the tuning of the engine
by changing the backpressure (being fuel injected) and cause problems. I
haven't been able to get a definitive answer from Harley or anybody about
this yet.
True duals will not screw up your engine because its FI with out back
pressure. Make sure you remap and all will be fine. I have many local riding
buds with true duals and FI. I programmed the power commander on one of them
after installing true duals. I've seen nor heard of any problems because of
the changing of back pressure on FI units. I do have a book from Branch that
proves back pressure did nothing for a carburetor bike as far as torque or
HP. The felt the cross over was just for emissions control.
