Maybe one for Nigel Eaton....Where can a person buy....?

1mm(ish) thick metal (aluminium ideally) sheeting?

I doubt the DIY type places would stock such a thing, but I've an idea
for something, and want to buy a piece at least 20cm x 80 cm.
and many, many more, all pretty expensive for what you get, mind.
Road signs. It's what most pikeys nick these days ;-)
I've been following the 635csi "rebuild" by Neil Ronketti [1] and a
recent post of his shows the difficulty of getting hold of such a thing,
he ended up using the sides off old washing machines, which isn't a bad
idea.

When I was in the paint spraying trade we just used to order sheet metal
from our paint suppliers, they generally supply everything you'd want in
a bodyshop, I can't see why they wouldn't deal over the counter. I
thought .8mm was the norm, but it was a looong time ago now.
Who is one of the pixies....
Rob mate, just shave it off, dye it or buy a hat.
Not exactly, more a "here's where the heat shield finishes too early for
using my big panniers, and I could do with 2 bungee points." idea I
thought worth testing.

The whole 10R mudguard arrangement is held on by 4 bolts and it'd
actually be a 10 minute job to drop it, bolt a sheet in above, bent in
such a way that it ran above the existing pipes & heatshield, then
dropped down so the pannier could rest against it without touching the
exhaust.
Get some solder shields from the local DIY store.

It's just an idea really, and something that would be fairly easy to
drop on in advance of a touring holiday, if it worked out.

Of course, this may be a non event, as it may turn out the carbon
Akropovic pipes I'm likely to recieve soon are actually cool to the
touch, and won't burn panniers.
They run cooler than metal ones, at least you can touch them
reasonably comfortably when the bike has been running.
I think you'll find the cat is in a Y piece further forward and the
Akrapovics won't run any cooler. I dumped the standard can off my bike
because it contained the cat and got vf hot vf quickly.

I'm going to get some heat resistant sheeting when I get back to work
and try it out on Adies bike so if it works I'll liberate a bit extra.
We can get hold of fibre type stuff or plastic and I reckon the
plastic will do the job.
You'd be surprised. B&Q do aluminium splashbacks for kitchens that
would fill your requirements.
from the weight of the one I just fitted, I'd say they are steel
Run home now.

You've fitted an RSJ to your sink & your new window is being held up by
a splashback.
Hmm, I just looked at the finish. And bought good old fashioned
tiles.

Ideal, ta Ben.
More likely he's going for a set of trainer wheels.
