ot: sell it or run it into the ground?

the Jeep that is. We've had the thing since August 2000, and I'm sort
of bored with it. Also, although it's never been dodgy in the past,
I'm concerned that a car that will be 8 years old at the end of this
year may have something go wrong with it (aircon, autobox) that
requires a large % of the value of the car to actually fix.

Jeep Cherokee
4=2E0 Limited 5d Auto 1999/S
Average mileage 70,000 miles
Original Price =A323,220
Independent Dealer =A33,195
Private Good =A32,745
Private Poor =A31,800
Part Exchange =A32,205

ours only has 42K miles on it, and I'd say the condition was "fair" to
"good" - no dents, but it's been used to haul stuff, so there are quit
a few scratches here and there. On the other hand, everything works
bar the radio (this went into a strange mode after the battery of the
car went flat, where it just displays "Wait 2hrs" on the screen...).
So, it's probably worth somewhere in the middle of the figures above,
let's say the part exchange value.

It cost us =A311K, so that's just under 9K depreciation in 7 years - I
don't think this is too bad, compared to what it'd have been like if
we'd bought it from new.
Assuming that you could sell it for 2K now, then on the basis of the
above, if it runs for another 2 years without any major work, you're still
just as sorted. Anything longer than 2 years, will be practically making
you money.
well, yes - at the same average depreciation, it'd be worth nothing in
2 years, and as long as nothing goes wrong, this wouldn't be the case.

I'd keep it.
seems to be the consensus - cheers.

Thing is, I really do need an additional 4-door 5-seat car as well as
the RX-8, as it's not exactly suitable for hauling stuff to the dump,
and of course I'd be screwed on the times I do have four passengers.

So, as per subject - should I get shot of the Cherokee before
something breaks badly? Or take my chances?
Sell it.

No, wait...
How about constructing a spreadsheet scoring the merits and negative
points of either situation...
yeah - I had that done, and a new exhaust rear section was needed. And
new front disks. But that's been it.
food for thought.
Fill it with petrol/butane and drive it to your nearest airport.
I've found that vehicles that have always behaved themselves tend to
go on behaving themselves indefinitely, IYSWIM. If it's only worth a
couple of grand and still goes fine, just keep running it and worry
about a breakdown when it actually happens rather than before.
You're right there - they reach an equilibrium that with the usual
routine tlc, can last a very long time.
