OT: Bump keying, hoax or real?

Real or hoax?

If real then what are the lock companies going to do about it?
Well Abloy and Medeco don't need to do anything about it - most of
their locks can't be bumped. They can be compromised by other methods
though.

Why spend all that money on locks if you still have glass windows? Not
to mention the many door frames that will give way to a hefty boot.
Because with a smashed window or door your insurance co pays out. Without
evidence of a break-in you could be knackered.
Oh right. Well you spend your money on locks, and I'll break a window,
just before I call the police, if I ever get keybumped.
Much as I'd love to claim this a little piece of genius, really, it's
just common sense isn't it.
It's easier for the scrotes to go through a wall in some cases than the
door, especially with modern construiction methods of Breeze
block/Aircrete/Cinderblock.

Pleanty of evience of break in then !
I can imagine someone totally inept - say me fr'instance - coming back from
hols to find the house empty but no sign of break-in and then manufacturing
evidence of break-in in such a way that it was totally obvious that I'd done
it. I imagine my case against the insurers would be somewhat weakened.
A weakened case is better than an open and closed non-case.

Are you saying you don't bother with locks because having breakable windows
makes them pointless?
Yes I have locks, yes I mostly [1] use them - but only as a deterent to
the casual chancer and to satisfy insurance requirements.

Anyone who wants to break into my(your) gaff for a specific reason,
will do so regardless of any bits of metal I(you) place between two
bits of significantly weaker wood/metal/plastic.

Unless you have intruder proof windows, doors, garage doors, roof etc
what's the point in panicking over something that a) isn't a new threat
and b) can easily be bypassed anyway.

[1] although I have an occasional tendancy to leave one of the out of
sight back doors unlocked, however, unless there are still water based
pirates around, I'm unlikely to see a break in through there.
Well I only heard recently that French insurance won't pay unless
there's clear damage to indicate a forcible break-in. So if you just
forget to lock the door you're not covered. Apparently.
Blimey - I'd have thought that obvious (from an "insurance company
finds any excuse not to pay - non shocker" perspective), just shows how
we all think differently eh?

I hope you didn't find out the hard way.
No. I 'heard' but have no first-hand evidence to support it. TBH I'm
still not 100% convinced that it could be as black and white as it was
presented. E.g. if the interior of a house was completely ransacked
but no exterior windows or doors broken would they really be able to
Happens to us every time my son looks for something.

get out of it?
Nothing. It's been that way for years.
It's real - it's the principle behind a "Houdini gun" and why
Quite worrying then. And I've only just bought some new cylinder locks so
I'll make sure I lock my doors with the mortise locks from now on then.

you can open a cylinder lock with a felt-tip pen.

What are they going to do? Not much, because this is not
common knowledge and any decent security system needs
Err, I think it is now.
The Internet != common knowledge

more than just a key to a lock to disable.
but 99% of locks are not part of any sort of 'decent security system'.
Thank you, Mr Murray.
