Buying over the internet

How risky is it buying over the Internet?

I'm thinking about buying a jacket.

Thanks for your responses.
I've spent thousands buying music gear, m/c jackets/helmets and once a
bike. The only problem buying clothing is sizing (for me anyway). Just
make sure they will exchange if the size is wrong.

It's always "Buyer Beware", but a pal of mine has a "thing" for jackets
made in America and he's bought half a dozen on eBay with zero trouble.
Used from an individual? Or new from a website?

From an individual, it depends on how well you trust him. I have
very seldom been ripped off (but occasionally). It's a chance you
take. The last thing for my bike I bought that way, the guy e-mailed
me a couple of days later to see how I liked it. I mailed him back
saying I liked it just fine. He said 'Okay, then I'll cash your
check.'

From an online business, it's much safer. Usually they have very
friendly return policies. If it's an online store you're not familiar
with, post their name here and see if anyone else has done business
with them.

Personally I can recommend newenough.com.
I'll second that.
I've bought several items over the web and not had any real problems
at all. Sizing of the jacket might be the only real problem. I have
gone and checked out the item in some of the local stores to make sure
the item itself is what I really need and if the sizing is right.
I'm sure the local stores appreciate you use them as your personal
changing room then buying from someone else.
Depends on the item in some cases the local B & M stores have nearly
as good a deals as the web or it's close enough that I'll go ahead and
buy there. If for instance I'm looking at a Cortech Flex jacket and
the web price and the store price are within 10% of each other before
the shipping and handling charges then I'll go ahead and buy locally.
Especially if the date of a trip is closing in or I just have that
aquisition syndrome working.
