Swollen Head
|
Am I the only sufferer out there?
After an hour or so in a bike hat my head begins to feel like it's in
a vice. Some helmets are worse than others, and some sooner than
others, but all eventually become bothersome. I've kicked around the
idea of buying an oversized helmet for longer trips to see if it will
alleviate the problem.
|
Never had that problem...but one problem I get that I can't seem to figure
out is this:
Sometimes when travelling at high speed..200km/h or above...I get this
pressure in my ears similar to what you get when diving. Doesn't happen
very often but sometimes. In a very rare occasion or two I even had to stop
over it because it actually started hurting.
Not quite sure what causes that or what to even do about it. Kind of
annoying. Usually goes away almost instantly if I slow back down.
|
|
And here I was thinking this post was gonna be about your ego.
|
|
I'd try a different style helmet.
|
Well, I currently have an Arai, Shoei, Nolan, and HJC. Two are full
face and two open face. I could go broke taking this route.
|
Loose helmets can be really annoying. You will feel them lift at highway
speeds. And, any time you move your head, they kinda lag. I generally get
a helmet that is uncomfortably tight to start. It takes about a week's worth
of commuting before it breaks in (HJC helmet - higher quality helmets might
not need as much of a break-in).
|
All of them except the Nolan are very comfy for rides shorter than an
hour or two.
|
Oh yea, loose helmets seem to result in a headache when you slam them against
the pavement while you head is in them. Granted, I don't have a huge
sample set to prove this - this is what I found in my limited experience
(hit my head hard once with a loose helmet and felt it for a few days - hit
my head really hard with a tight helmet and didn't feel anything).

You're not the only one. I get the same thing. I wear a "head wrap"
thingy on my commutes under my helmet. But longer rides, after about an
hour, I take the thing off, and all is better. Don't know why.
|
Both sound like symptoms of ill fitting/wrong shaped helmets.
|
I was thinking Steve and I simply spend longer times in the seat than
most.
|
Maybe than most, but there are some who spend longer times than you who
don't have swollen helmet heads. So it's more than just the time.
|
maybe we were mistaken.... we thought Saddles head was full of water, but is
it possible that it is full of carbonated water? a little vibration could
cause that gourd of his to swell right on up!!

I don't do the long trips like you do. But I do ride pretty much 10 1/2
months out of the year. My trips are mostly a couple hours here and
there to visit customers, and run errands and such for work.
The scorpion EXO400 I wear is quite comfy 99% of the time. I also
*REALLY* like the anti-fog shield. And I just ordered this, this morning
|
I was pretty impressed with the Scorpion helmets - didn't buy one because
it had a tight spot on my forehead. But overall it seemed like a very good
helmet. The salesman took the shield off, and bent the thing completely
backwards and it didn't snap or get deformed.

Now, if I could just find somebody that made an anti-fog coating that
actually worked for more than 30 minutes for my glasses!
|
|
Even on my long rides (400-500 miles) I have nothing like you or he
describe.
