New Thumper owner
|
I just traded a boat for a '76 Yamaha Thumper in almost excellent
condition.. Seems to smoke quite a bit when cold. Is this a common
problem?? The previous owner said it really smokes after it's been
trailed somewhere.. I'm talkin 3 or 4 minutes mosquito control white
smoke. Cranks pretty easy after it's warmed up. Lots of power, fun to
ride.
I can remember when the Thumpers first came out and my Dad droolin over
one. Brings back lotsa memories and now, I have my own.
Any ideas on the smoke??

My Fiances 86 DR200..smokes a very little bit at start up...my 86
XR200R doesnt smoke at all ..the DR stops after about 2
minutes...Sounds to me like you may have to replace the
rings/piston..and have the cylinder honed..Keep an eye on your oil
level....check your valve adjustments.
I am sure the others from the board can help you out more...I am out
of the loop big time since I had no bike for 3 years ...but just my 2
cents.

Anchorage?!?! That's not smoke, son, it's condensation! ;->
But seriously... white smoke is nearly always due to water in the
combustion chamber. On an air-cooled bike like yours, you can probably
rule out bad head gasket and/or cracked head/cylinder. So where is the
water coming from? I'd drain the carb and flush the tank as a first
step. And install a new fuel filter while you're at it.
Then check the oil to see if there's any water in there. Oil and
water don't mix, so if you drain the old oil you should be able to
identify any water. If the bike's been sitting outside in Alaska for a
long time condensation may indeed form inside the metal gas tank.
The only mystery is that water in the gas should also cause the
bike to run roughly, and you said it runs good. Does the smoke only
happen with the choke on? What's the ambient temperature when you're
running it? Could there be water inside the muffler/exhaust pipe? Just
curious, what size (displacement) is the bike? TT-500?
