I put in an email to my friend Cliff out at Piper Performance in
North Richland Hills asking for a cylinder-boring quote. He's a long
way from my house, but he did an excellent job on my son's DT-80
cylinder and rebuilt my rear shock when most shops wouldn't consider
it.
In the meantime, I stopped by Central Yamaha today since it was on
my way home and talked to "Johnny" in the service department. I
noticed when I entered a sign that informed me rates were $39.00 per
1/2 hour. So I asked Johnny how much to bore my cylinder...
"Well," he says, punching digits on the calculator, "I charge an hour
and a half because I chamfer the ports and all, so... it'd be $117
plus tax."

Of course, the local Yamaha shop doesn't actually do the machine work
- they sub it out to a machine shop and pay them the $55.

Who in turn subs it out to China for $3.17.

Wow.
So then I got home and checked my email and Cliff had replied...
"We can bore your cylinder, the price is $55.00 and includes
chamfering the ports and ball hone. Turn around time is about 3 days.
We will need the piston that you want to bore it to or we can order
one."

That sounds much more reasonable and realistic.

Fred,
The last sentence of his quote may be the answer to the "three trips
across the metro area" dilemma you spoke about on the phone.
How much does he want for the piston kit? It may be cheaper to buy
the piston from him than make that third trip across town.
