CL160 Steering Damper

I'm trying to remove the fork bridge on my CL160 and I can't figure out
how to get the steering damper knob off. Has anyone fiddled with the
damper on their CB/CL160? From the Clymer manual, it looks like the
knob fits over a threaded sleeve that rests on top of the main,
steering-head nut. Between the nut and the threaded sleeve, there's a
damper spring that fits into the damper knob, holding it in place. The
knob won't budge when I press in the spring and try rotating it. Any
ideas?
I had a CL160 a long time ago.

The spring is probably a detent that holds the knob in one position
after you rotate it to a setting you think you might like.

Those old friction dampers were worthless. The main thing I noticed
about them was that vibration made them fall apart and I'd lose the
friction bits on the road.

Isn't there a circlip (or a cotter pin, or a lynch pin)) underneath the
lower triple tree? My Clymer manual for the CB72 shows the mechanic
using a needlenose pliers to remove *something* under the forks. Then
you should be able to unscrew the knob and pull the whole shaft up,
while the friction bits fall off the bottom.
