Shovelhead prices
|
Happy New Year to all! (2007 here already).
Grab a beer, I got a question.
Been looking at shovel prices overhere (Netherlands) and a shovelhead in
a 'reasonable' state will cost me as much as an 1999 FXDX Dyna with,
lets say, 10K miles on it.
I got a great bike for daily use and maybe someday I want to restore
one, or get it in great shape again. Get my fingers greasy again :) How
are these shovel prices in your part of the world? USA/Canada/UK?
I'm very curious, because I think dealers here are overpricing them.

Its hard to say prices on those. They were made for over 20 years and
can vary widely depending on the model and on condition and price. The
earlier ones are bordering on to the collectable market and they are
also looked for as "donor" bikes to get an engine or other major
component for building a custom. But they are still around in some
numbers.
A source that would give you a rough idea on suggested retail prices on
them in the U.S. is the Kelly blue Book. That is a generally well
respected and credible source for retail prices and trade in values:
I bought a '97 Dyna FXD this summer and the suggested price in the Kelly
Blue Book was not far off from what I paid. What would a '97 FXD Dyna
with 50,000 miles on it be worth in Holland? It was a one owner bike,
very sold mechanically, well maintained and clean. That was worth about
$10,000 here purchased from the owner (not a dealer).
In the last 10-15 years the Europeans have been coming over here and
buying up Harleys because they were cheaper here. It sort of screwed
up the market for us Americans in some areas because they were willing
to pay more than typical market prices.

I recently sold my mint one owner '99 FXDX with 25,000 miles for $9,500.00.
It took 4 months to sell in California.

You won't find them for that price overhere. See my previous answer to
Jack.
