FOAK - FJ120 options

Looking at the options for the FJ12

Parts list now comes to £369 for pistons, rings, & gaskets.

For £750 Here:
is a 1988 stolen/recovered FJ1200, 1988, 45k miles

So buy that, put the engine and any other bits in better
nick in mine, and ebay the rest?

Or just ebay mine as parts and look for another bike
altogether?
For £369 you get the parts you need to rebuild your engine. You'll
gain experience from that exercise, as you have done for the
strip-down, sorting out of advice received, parts pricing, and
researching the alternatives. At the end of the day you'll have *your*
bike back running, and know an awful lot more about it than you did
before. Any bike you get as a replacement will be an unknown quantity,
and might want any kind of work doing to it. It's also the least-cost
option, and if for some reason it doesn't work out, you won't be that
much worse off if you then take up one of the alternatives.
Agreed 100% I always repair where I can rather than replace, usuallly
keeping things for far longer than is practical. You get to know the
vehicle better and importantly, what is potentially going to break next
!
achine.

True
rebored if
op.

What ? A set of T guages to check ovality, and a straight edge and
engineers blue. Not wildly expensive ..
All very true, of course, and I guess, if I do decide to swap it
afterwards, I'll get more for it as a running machine.

But before buying the bits, I'll have to get the bores checked and
honed/rebored if necessary, and lacking the tools, get the head checked
over by a bike shop.
Measuring equipment, honing equipment, a small surface plate and a
straight edge? Not a lot of change from £500 so not wildly expensive
at all.
Here's an option for you :
Tell you what, just as a favour, to make it easy for you,
as it were, and for no charge, I'll swap your FJ12 engine
for mine - just to save you a few hours work stripping it
down, like, then you can do this to yours.]
