Hard clutch pull
|
My 'ole XR400 clutch has slowly evolved into having a pull like a
cement mixer. I was able to force WD40 through the cable, but it
didn't have much noticable effect. It's probably still a need for a
new cable, but if not, what else could cause a clutch pull to get
wicked hard?
|
When I ran a clutch cable differently along the frame, it was almost
twice as hard to pull. No kinks or anything, just decreasing the
radius a bit did it I guess. Been thinking about getting one of those
reduction boxes to try out. Forget what they are called.
|
I had one of those reduction box thingies on my old CanAm. I forget
what they are called too, but those higher-mechanical-advantage 3-
position levers (Raptor by MSR - I had one of those on my XR4 for a
while and it worked was great) do pretty much the same thing.

Dear Jay,
cables move slowly under conciderable pressure.
Thin WD40 is not good lube here, some good old grease might do better.
Lubricants tend to actively grab dirt from where it flies around and
transport it into the outer cable.
First you have to get rid of the buildup of dirt...old gas will do.
Attach a 2 feet piece of gardenhose securely to the outercable with a
hoseclamp.
Put a fannel into the hose.
Pour gas into the fannel.
Wiggle and rotate the inner cable untill clear gas comes through.
Let it dry for a day or so.
Cram grease into the hose, push it down with a stick that exacly fits the
hose.
Secure the stick with another hoseclamp.
While applying pressure to the hose between stick and cable, wiggle and
rotate the innercable to transport grease all through the outercable.
Takes quite some doing for the price of just a clutchcable...

Even well lubbed, an old cable will always make the pull stiffer than
a new cable.
|
I'm way overdue for a new cable and assume that is the problem - I'm
just checking to see if it might be something else.
|
Stiffer aftermarket clutch springs makes the pull hard, too...
|
Original OEM springs (and everything else). Cables should last 10
years, shouldn't they?
|
Absolutely. When hung on the wall, they'll last 10 years easy.

What's probably happened is the cable has worn through the inner sheath
and no amount of lubricant will help. The best solution is a new
cable. This lesson brought to you by my old IT 200.
