04 YZ 250 Sticking Shifter

Hey Guys, I noticed last night while riding that my shifter is now
sticking when shifting gears.. especially when i have my clutch pulled
in, and I am trying to downshift, the foot shifter will not come back
up in position so I will have to force it back up in order to
downshift.. does anyone know what this might be about or what I should
do..?

Also, what would be the best tranny oil to use in this bike.. I mostly
ride desert.. Thanks.
The first thing to check would be the shifter mechanism inside the
clutch cover. (This mechanism is to be found on the "inside" end of
the shift shaft. )
It "scopes out" and contacts (rotates) the shift drum when you lift
or depress the shift lever. The piece has spring(s) that can get
sacked or broken and the contact part is susceptible to wear. The
piece that move against each other when it scopes out (and returns to
rest) can get rough and sticky, and may need smoothing.
Might be something as simple as a shift lever that is slightly bent in
toward the motor. Bend away from the motor if that is the case.
