XL600R engine noise update
|
I tore into the old honda this weekend and pulled the motor out. I
got the valve cover off and then went into the right side clutch
cover. It looks like the noise I was hearing was coming from the oil
pump gear being loose. The cover bolts along the bottom were not
tight providing some play as the gear rides one end into the cover. I
am going to do the cam chain tensioner, piston rings and top end
gaskets while looking around for any other issues. The cam chain
tensioner looks kind of nasty as the clutch and oil pump need to be
pulled to get access to it. Do you guys with the XR650L's do this
yourself or let the dealer do it?

Check the condition of the cam chain guides. I had one break and very
quickly wear out a new chain and tensioner.
If this is more than the first time the head has been off, consider
helicoiling the threads for the head bolts. Every RFVC Honda I've had
has blown it's head off. My old XL600R actually ejected part of the
head gasket (and still ran that way!).

DIY. The only troublesome thing is removing the clutch. If you don't have
an impact wrench, put some soft copper wire or sheet metal into
clutch/primary gear combo to lock the clutch from turning while you remove
the center nut.
I made a special tool to relieve the tension from the spring tensioner. A
hole drilled thru a small wooden block, and a small drift punch inserted
thru this hole worked fine.
You should pick up a service manual if you don't already have one.

Only advice I can offer you is:
- get the manual as per Jeff
- prime the oil pump on re-assembly. I've heard of folks using oil,
assembly lube, even vaseline.
- get it started, and loosen the oil line to the head to make sure the
head is getting oil
- if its like the XRL, the oil lines to the oil tank are very
sensitive to being twisted. Twist 'em, no oil!
