Tom Tom One - any thoughts
|
well, it seems to be "one new Satnav thread a day" season, so this is
|
I saw that Maplins have dropped the price of
their GPS/Bluetooth receiver unit [0] to 50 quid,
which means if (like me[1]) you have something
that will run a version of TomTom software then
you end up with a very cheap GPS unit.

my contribution.
|
I've got the Europe one, works fine.
|
that's the one I was thinking of getting - 200 quid including maps of
UK and Europe seems like a pretty good deal.
What I can't decide is whether to buy one, or to splash out another
100 quid to get an iPaq RX 5935 / Tom Tom bundle...
Probably the former, as I don't actually need a PDA.
|
|
|
Is it Tom Tom that essentially have the same hardware across the range
(memory varies but 10 quid for a 1GByte SD card and they *all* support
SD!) leaving the essential difference the maps, which are 'downloadable'.
|
The Tom Tom Rider hardware is different - i.e. can be mounted on a
bike and hopefully survive.
|
Discontinued I believe
|
Bollocks, I believe
|
It is still on the Tom Tom site at least
|

Very happy with mine although it has only been used in a variety of
cars and clutched in mitt walking around strange Spanish cities.
I use an 'Uhura' cheap Maplins bluetooth thingy in the car so that I
can permanently mount the OEM earpiece in my helmet when the time
comes.
Ony slight problem is that you have to reset to factory defaults to
swap between the bluetooth jobbies or it keeps trying to connect to
the last one you used. This is not a big deal excpet that you thereby
lose any saved destinations and your 'home'.
Not found a way round it yet. I might try a cloned SD card, but I
suspect the system settings are in firmware in the unit itself.
|
Let us know if you make any progress as I have the same problem. I use a
Jabra Bluetooth speaker for the car and the TomTom headset on the bike.
(actually I don't bother as it's too much trouble to swap over and
experience has shown that it gets much more use in the car than on the
bike).
|
Beware that even the most up to date maps are a bit flakey in Spain
where lots of new roads are being built. Also detail on one way
systems in towns seems not 100%.
I found myself saying more than once, "I'm sorry Jane, I can't do
that".
Otherwise very useful (Points of Interest database surprisingly
comprehensive). When ICBA I will experimrnt with establishing a
connection with my pikey old T68i for the traffic etc.

I want one
|
I think I do to, however:
is it just me, or is that very cheap for a PDA/GPS combination?
I can't see the catch except the bit where it mentions the grey import
and "always check the part number", but doesn't show how...
|
|
|
How well does it work after bouncing off the road into a bucket of
water?
|
|
TomTom will launch their refreshed range there, so there should be a price
drop in the current range.
|
Good idea - I don't need[1] the thing until Easter.
[1] read: "want".
|
|
|
What does one need for the functionality Bear bums up, the traffic
reports and dynamic re-routing?
|
Bums up?
I use a bottom of the range TomTom One, with a subscription to their
traffic & camera service (50 euros a year) and a data bundle with
Orange. Seems to work ok, although I've learned to ignore any short
delays as it often gets the benefits of its alternative route a bit
wrong. Fine for big delays, mind.
I'm thinking of upgrading to the top of the line one, coz I fancy
Europe-wide route planning on one device, but if Brownz reckons they'll
be releasing new ones soon I may hang on awhile.
|
So this is a Bluetooth link between phone and Tom Tom, yes? I have a Tom
Tom Go but AFAICT it has no such function. Whether it can be done via
micro usb I do not know.
|
Why bother? You're minted, they're cheap as chips, go buy a One, you
tight-arsed jock pikey.
|
Correction:
The legal team are minted.

|
Check the tomtom website around the 15th of March - 1st day of CeBit when
they normally do the press launch.
As the new models filter through; you *should* see most webvendors dumping
the current range and offering some sort of discount on them.
I'll call by the stand and pick up some bumph, but won't be back until 21st,
so details will probably be all over t'tinternet by then.
|
Ta; what I want is something like the current top of the range, but with
a hot cradle, so I'm not forever plugging and unplugging the power
cable.

|
I like mine. Does all you need it to really.
