Kawasaki GT550 clutch release delay

In the last day or so if I park the bike (backwards) on a hill and
release the clutch it takes a full 1 second before the bike suddenly
starts to move. I suppose the plates are sticking or something. Is
this a bad omen? Is something bad about to happen?
Sticking cable. They run the clutch cable down the front frame downtube,
left-hand side, right next to the exhaust headers, and it dies early.
New cable, job done.
Probably just a poorly lubricated cable, not likely to be anything to
do with the plates.
Well I'm going round to some friends' house for dinner, and quite
likely to have a skinful, so maybe later...

Any advice welcome.
