is it knackered? Calling Kawasakuza
|
Hi folks,
Went to look at a ZZR 1100 D ('94, 34,000 miles) to sit alongside the VMax
for longer rides [1] yesterday, 300 mile round trip, lucky work pays for the
petrol... overall it's in reasonable nick, needs some TLC, a bit of a polish
etc, but the motor sounded a bit noisy (low-frequency rumblings and a bit of
clatter that didn't appear to be from the top end) - I compared it to g/f's
'96 11,000 mile GPZ1100 which is a lot quieter, should it sound a lot
noisier considering the mileage, or should I resist the urge to buy it? I
tried the usual pull-the-clutch-in in case it was clutch noise, made no
difference, are there known weak spots on these motors that should put me
off it? the bloke's after about 1300 for it, which is quite cheap,
admittedly, but I don't want to have an engine rebuild to do before the
summer...

Well, they are typically unburstable Kawasaki motors, so there's no
known problems with them. However, nothing is perfect, and anyone can
run a bike low on oil.
|
I know four people who've blown ZZR1100 motors, and one of them was you!
|
If you get any oil leak from the engine sprocket oil seal it's enough to
drop the oil pressure on no 3 big end. With the results of a con rod
going AWOL in some cases.

er, yersh. But it was ok once the (american) factory fault had been
sorted.

From your description, it sounds like there could be a bit of camchain
rattle, which is not a serious problem - a new external tensioner
mechanism would sort that. Also, noise at tickover can often be
related to our of balance carbs - did you try holding the throttle at
higher revs (say 3~4k)?
I'm assuming you didn't ride it?
Anyway, Kawasaki sold *loads* of ZZR11s, and there should be plenty
out there, so you don't have to buy the first one you see.

|
As Champ says, there are so many good 1100s out there, that I really
wouldn't bother with one that sounds iffy. For another =A3700-odd, you
can get a really nice one.

Dave H. (The engineer formerly known as Homeless)
[1] South of France on a 'max is fun, but stopping to fill up every 80 miles
slows everyone down a bit... and although it's a good upper-body workout,
sitting there like a barn door in the breeze is a bit tiring...
|
That is NOT cheap for a 1100. I bought a utterly mint 1996 for £1600,
it was sweeter than any engine i have ever had. Clutches can make a bit
of a row, but any engine noise like that is wrong. Hence - expensive,
not cheap.
