[OT] Cheap AirCon Service

Pebley Beach Suzuki[1] in Wroughton (near Swindon) are currently doing
an a/c service & re-gas for 45 quid. At that price it'd be rude not to,
especially as it's just around the corner from SO's cafe, giving you
somewhere to pass the time while they do it.
Web site says they spray nice smelly stuff onto your aircon for 5p short
of 50 quid, no mention of re-gas?
Sorry yes, it's 50 not 45, & it definitely includes a re-gas[1].

Do you know how long it takes? Another garage near me says they need an
hour for a re-gas, no while-u-wait. They also do it for 50 quid.
1.5 hours to be on the safe side.

[1] They took 80 grams out of mine & put 900 back in. That'll be why
the compressor wasn't kicking in then...
Just out of interest, how often are systems supposed to be re-gassed?
The service schedule for our 2 cars with a/c say every 2 years.
Hmm, so I had best check the '03 car I'm picking up on Saturday then... It's
being sserviced before I get it, so *maybe* it'll get checked.

Wonder if it's covered under the "unlimited warranty" they're offering...
Regassing won't be, 'cos it's part of the service schedule.

I'd insist on it being done as part of the pre-sales service.
Yeah, good idea, cheers for that. I'll check the service log when I get it
and see when/whether it's been done. I'm not going to get all shouty as they
have been pretty good so far, but I will make sure it's ok.
Says 2 years on my Seat but the car was 5.5 years old before the compressor
stopped running. I got a man in a van to come to me. Cost £75 which seemed
to be the going rate last summer during the heat wave. I see local places
with boards outside advertising from about £50 now.
If it's anything like one of my cages, way too often. Some seem to last
for years, others less than a year.
That generally means it's been left too long without the a/c being
used, & the seals have dried out.
My car manual actually says the air con should be used once a month
for at least half an hour in order to maintain it.
I don't think it's a specific timescale thang. If the compressor stops
working, it probably means the gas is too low[1], so that's the time to
do it.

[1] The gas carries the lubricant, so the compressor's magnetic clutch
won't engage if the pressure's too low.
Did they figure out where the missing 820 grams went, or will you be
back there in due course for another dose of ozone layer depletion?
I like them there, I did some leather trim work for them about 6 or 7
years ago. IIRC the daughter of one of the bosses was a bit cute.
Ah, the lovely Laura no doubt. She's in the Cirencester branch now I
think.
Possibly, I just seem to remember always being unbothered about going
there all the way from North Notts cos the view was always good once I
got there. Friendly folk who always kept me dosed up on coffee too.

They are a jolly good bunch, & far & away the most sensible cage garage
I've found for MoTs.
I wouldn't know about that, but why are they called Pebley Beach when
they are so far inland?
