re-registering cat d/c write-offs
|
hi, im thinking about buying a bike which is a category d write-off. i
would like to know what is involved in putting the bike back on the
road and how do i get a new V5 (logbook). thanks, Rob

Are you sure about that. Hog managed it quite easily and I know quite a
few others who have too. It does help if you have trade access to new
and used parts and half a clue about what you're doing. Cat C or D
wouldn't put me off taking a good look over if the price was right and I
had the time to repair it in.

It's like everything else to do with bikes in that it's easy if you've
got a clue. If you're new to bikes and think it'll be cheap you'll end
up in tears.

I got the Gixxer as a Cat C or D (1) and the salvage dealer had used
some parts of other smashed bikes to replace the damaged bodywork etc.
It was only a few months old with 2.5k miles and I paid a little over
half retail for a minter.
(1) It became both a Cat C and D eventually, in neither case did it
appear to do anything DVLI wise and it wasn't inspected. When I bought
it I simply applied for a new V5 in my name. Loz did likewise second
time around.

More than you are capable of handling.

It's harder than you can understand.

You have to apply to the DVLA using the form (i think) V62 which
is avaliable from most post offices for the V5 registration documents,
you have to know the reg number and chassis numbers. I seem to
remember its £15 for this and could take a few weeks while checks
are taking place.
