Honda 125cc OHC single (electric start) cam chain tension adjust?
|
My son's CLR125 (cityfly) has done quite a few miles and I reckon the cam
chain might need adjustment (not noisy yet but Honda cam chains usually need
regular re-tensioning). However, I can't work out if its manual or auto
adjustment and I have no BOL. AFAIK on some older Honda 125 OHC engines cam
chain adjustment was done by lifting the rubber cap on the adjuster bolt
near the base of the cylinder and loosening the 14mm nut while the engine is
running. However, this engine is electric start and doesn't seem to have the

Not quite. You loosen the 14mm nut, insert a screwdriver in the slot of
the adjuster bolt, and turn it anti-clockwise until the engine quietens.
Completely manual.

14mm nut type adjuster. It seems to have what may well be a cam chain
adjuster - a large domed screw with a phillips screwdriver type cross-slot,
sitting in a bolted on plate at the rear of the cylinder on the cam chain
side. It can be seen in the photo below, just behind (and partially
obscured by) the electric starter motor.

That'll be it, all right.

Anyone know if this is the cam chain adjuster, and if so, how is it
adjusted?
|
No idea how to adjust that. If it's not rattling, I'd leave well alone,
because it might be a fully automatic jobbie. My guess is that's a
semi-automatic one, though, and that you set it to TDC, undo the nut
slightly, and then re-tighten, but that's just a guess.
I'd call a Honda dealer and ask.

Thats a good idea - I have a friendly dealer near work. It isn't a nut -
its a largish domed head with a cross-slot for a phillips-type screwdriver.
I wonder if it might actually be a cover for an adjuster bolt that is
underneath it. That would make sense as the phillips-type bolt thingy has
no locknut and appears to be fully screwed in.
