Chain Lubrication

Does anyone have any thoughts about a good chain lubricant/oil? 4000
Chain oil.

miles between services seems a bit too long when I'm doing 100 miles/day
commute. M&P seem to have a wide selection but I haven't a clue where to
start...
You weren't seriously considering 4k miles without lubing the chain,
were you? You'd be looking at twice a week on a warm chain (when you
get home rather than before you set off) with a decent quality aerosol
lube. Silkolene or PJ-1 spring to mind, but I'd stay away from chain
wax by preference.

For the ultimate in fit-and-forget, a Scottoiler with a touring
reservoir is the only answer.

I concur with Putoline.
I use the same stuff and only lube when the rings look shiney!
They should look dull if lubed ok. Works out at about 500 miles i re
lube depending on weather etc.
Real oil, applied generously, 12 hours before the next outing is my
choice. Put some old carpet under the bike and use a squirty can. DO
NOT RIDE THE BIKE FOR AT LEAST 12 HOURS AFTERWARDS (unless you want
the oil in a nice spray pattern over your back wheel)
It's cheap, it does the job and you don't get any sticky white
overspray anywhere.
That said, I use whatever I can get hold of when out and about, wax,
gel, oil, whatever is in the shop.
I honestly beleive that the important thing is to oil it regularly,
after that, it's your choice.
Oh, and don't worry too much about it either, some people seem anal
about chain oiling, if you forget, then just oil it when it looks a
bit dry and you'll probably be fine, change it when you run out of
adjustment or it has tight links, (ker-chunk, ker-chunk) (or the lugs
get hooked). If you find that you only get 4000 miles before a chain

swap, then you didn't oil it enuf. Do it more next time.

IMHO, HTH etc.
