OT: London hotels
I'm off to London for SO's 40th in Feb.
Which website is the best for finding a hotel?
I don't know London, but we'll be arriving via train to Euston, we'll want

=A370 a night, but no breakfast.
Sure there used to be a chain advertising along the Marylebone Road
offering better deals than that, last time I plodded along there.
However, that was a while back... but it was the same sort of gig as a
Travelodge.

to take in a few sites and a west end show. Which area is the best place to

don't muck around with old tat like Les Mis; try and catch "Avenue Q"
I'd be up for seeing that, if it weren't a musical.
that's pretty much my take on it. "No straight guy likes a musical".
Is liking The Producers OK?
Oh, come on: everyone loves "Anything Goes"
not me. Don't care for Bing.
No - at a theatre. It's ace.

Blaney in "nine bob note" shocker.
Not really.
I was always fairly sure I didn't like musicals, but then a year or so
back I actually went to one (Chicago), and I was appalled by its
awfulness.
I had the opposite experience. I was always fairly sure I didn't like
musicals, then I went to see Anything Goes and thought it was utterly
superb.
Tho I will allow a slight fondness for the movie "On The Town".
Given the recurring themes on this news group I would have thought 'Guys
and Dolls' or 'The Producers' would come top of the favourite musicals
list.
I certainly couldn't sit through a whole musical, but there are bits of
ones that are tolerable. Joseph, for example, or South Pacific. Some
classic tunes, but on a par with opera in the pass-the-razorblade
stakes.

I've stayed before at The Astor Court, Hallam St, Westminster. Two
bedrooms, 1 x double, 1 x twin, small kitchen, en suite, and
continental breakfast for =A377 all in, per night. Dining room was a
tad basic, but it was perfectly functional.
Somewhat faded, but very clean and great location. I'll send you the
Managers e-mail addy if you're interested.

stay, after no more than B&B £30 each per night (if such a thing exists).
hahahahahaha.
That was my initial reaction
You could try the Travelodge @ King's Cross (10 minutes walk from
Euston), but it'll probably still be closer to 100 quid/night for a
double room (and no breakfast).
75 quid when I stayed there a couple of years ago.
cheap at twice the price.
Perhaps the OP would be better off visiting Sheffield or its ilk.
Sheffield's a bit posh - maybe Middlesborough.
Sunderland.
or "Come to Cleethorpes - it rains a bit, but it's not far from Grimsby"
However, lastminute.com does throw up a few 1* hotels for around £35
per night.
I've stayed at cheapish places down Gower Street, which is not very
far from Euston.
Are these the ones where you take a large tub of calamine lotion to
clear up the fleabites?
No, but you avoid stepping in the puddles in the hallway...

Euston Station. Cardboard box. Your call.

If you're brave enough to leave it til the day before, you can get some

Compared to published rates, perhaps, but not against real world rates,
IME.
I recently stayed in Lunnon, over NYE in fact, booked last minute - and
saw the Sarova Rembrandt (Knightsbridge) on laterooms. When I then back
checked the price against the Sarova website, I found I could get a
"grand room"[1] at the same price as laterooms was offering a standard
room.
Breakfast wasn't bad either.
[1] for London, the room was pretty huge for a non-suite affair, proper
kingsize bed with decent pillows, duvets, big telly, stereo, jacuzzi
bath, sofas, desk etc.

[1] and expedia [2]
[1] £10 per booking rebate via quidco.com if you can be arsed, book each
night as a separate transaction to maximise the rebate. This strategy gave
me a free night in a hotel in Reims last year.
[2] compare prices at the .com and .co.uk variants as there might be a
difference

Searcys Roof Garden Rooms makes for an interesting alternative to a trad. B&B
or hotel - a bit over your price range, mind.
