Chain Maintenance
|
|
I asked the service writer at my local dealer(he's an honest guy, and I
know him well, so I do trust what he tells me), he's not seen a single
'06 belt broken. And they've sold about a dozen Ulys this year.
A Quick search On badweb, I see a few broken belts. All replaced under
warranty.
One at 4600 Miles, and another at 2800 and another at 25,152
See, the Buell drive belts, in operation are extremely strong. But
improper handling of 'em when changing tires seems to be the common
denominator here. If they twist the belt when removing the rear wheel,
seems to stress the belt.
What *DOES* seem to be a problem, is the sidestands. There is a recall
on the '06s for that.
And EARLY '06s seem to seep some oil out the transmission output shaft
seal. Our CityX is going in to get that seal replaced next week under
warranty. When I say seep, I mean, like a teaspoon of oil in the last
2000 Miles. I wouldn't notice it, if I had actually washed the bike once
in a while :)
Did you see the '07s come with Pirellis Scorpion Sync now? *MUCH* better
tires for the XB chassis. They also will last longer than the Dunlop
D616s that are on the Ulys. Not as agressive tread though.
So when ya gonna buy one? :)
I'm either going to pick up a Uly, or Lightning Long in January.

Being a lazy MF, I got the FJR, in part, thinking that my maintenance
chores would decrease considerably with it being a shafty and all. I
was just reading the FJR site on shaft maintenance and OMG is it
intense. They have you ripping apart the entire assembly and lubing
about 15 seals with lithium grease and shaft splines with high content
Moly grease (that apparently ain't so cheap or easy to find). Crymany,
I'm ready to trade it back for a simple chain...
|
The maintance schedule is? If it's every 60k, big deal....I think the BMW's maintance calls for a
simular assembly lubing at 45k and is (I hear) quite expensive.
|
Is it any wonder why? Scroll down to scanned page from the manual:

Saddle please note:
5. [3rd Update 6/25/06] After much discussion, debate, and opposing opinions*, it has been confirmed
that the rear drive shaft splines ARE lubed by the final drive gear oil (in the "pumpkin"). Even so,
it is adviseable that you service the rear drive shaft splines and oil seal #2 occasionally..
While I do admire extremism (Zen in the art of motorcycle maintance), what does the owners manual
say?
|
It is oddly silent about anything save the diff oil change frequency.
Yet the FJR guys say Honda and Beemer shaftie guys will tell you that
you'll be replacing the the splines front and rear every 50k miles if
not properly slathered in 60% moly grease with every tire change.

The internet is crawling with worrywarts, didn't you know? My ST1100 went

65k, only changing final drive oil and a RARE greasing of the gears when the
rear wheel was removed.
|
Did you do it yourself or take the bike in for tire changes?
|
|
Hey, I just said that.
There must be an echo in here.

|
After re-reading a few posts, I think all the LS (lithium soap)
callouts in the factory manual are only required if the differential
(pumpkin) is disassembled. I can deal with lubing the splines, provided
I can find the grease. Apparently, not all greases labeled "Moly" are
equal. Normal brake greases with this label are only ~3%. Apparently,
this Moly is a solid that remains doing it's lubricating thing even
after the liquid in the grease has long since dried up.

Saddle, you don't even know how much you are making me love my chain
at this moment =)
Takes me less than 10 minutes to lube that chain...and that's if I am
not in a hurry...

|
Hell that bike ought to be good for 100k without hardly any work....

Unless you do 100,000 miles a year I believe shafties are way
overratted in terms of low maintenace. Keep it simple with 20-25K
miles from 530 chain/sprocket life. Or at least so here in the Sun
Belt:)

Whats the big deal? Probably a once a year deal for 90% of the riders out
there.
Low noise, no lube slinging of, spraying over the bike, and no adjustments!
Buy a HD! The belt on my HD has not been adjusted yet at 15,000 miles!

|
Buells don't looks so bad, maintenance wise :) No shaft to grease up, no
chain to oil, etc..
|
|
Are they making things that much more difficult these days?
Maintenance on my shafties involves putting a grease gun on a zerk
fitting once every 7200 miles and changine the final drive lube every
21,000 miles...which takes all of 5 minutes.
I've been considering an ST1300 but if it's anything like your FJR I
may stick with the Busa and its chain.
