B6 and the cold..

Could someone tell me what happens when it starts to get a bit cooler
(freezing) and on the way home on an evening my B6 wants to cut out,
even though it's been going a good 10 mins..

Not that this helps, but I have no problems with my 2000 B6...

The UK models don't tend to have probs, the import models do. Coz the
import models usually don't have carb heaters.

I seem to recollect something along the lines of freezing carbs...
What does this mean in practice?
Is there any way to avoid it happening?
