High Octane Fuel

How does High Octane Fuel improve engine performance?

I assumed it slows the ignition so you could compress the fuel more
and change the timing. So High Octane Fuel on a vehicle with no Anti
Knock Sensor and the timing set up for 95 RON fuel would get no
benefit. Is that right?
Completely non scientific findings. I had an X7 that when using super
unleaded (as it was known then) and a slight carb upjet ran cooler and did
not blow itself up. I had a GSX250 which I noticed ran noticeably cooler
also. I had a Renault Laguna 1.8 SOHC that in a fit of desperation to get
decent mpg's out of it I filled with Super unleaded. I got 2.5mpg's per
gallon more each time I filled with 98RON as opposed to 95. Take from that
what you like.
I think I saw this talked about on car forums last year. High octane
fuel on a non-knock-sensor engine isn't going to improve performance,
but the stuff that accompanies this happy fuel designed to clean the
engine will still do the job of cleaning bits and bobs but without the
performance increase. SWK will be along shortly to give you a better
answer.
