Long Way Round

This has probably been discussed before, but I just watched the whole lot in
one go and was wondering what the group thought.
Apart from the money required to pull off such a feat, what are the
practicalities of doing a continental bike tour? It wouldn't necessarily
require anything as extreme as Siberia, just something more interesting than
the local area.
Hypothetically, if you were to engage on a 1 month trip around somewhere
foreign, and cost is a factor, where would you go, what bike would you take,
and what things would you need to prepare for?
That depends greatly on which continent.
I get a lot of Aussies each Summer going to New Zealand. Obviously we
(Get Routed) ship their bikes over and there is a cost of around $1500
per bike return.

Some have only considered NZ, because it's easy and the roads are
relatively unpopulated, the scenery is sensational and the roads are
way better than anything in Australia - so sayeth our clients.

Some see it as a stepping stone to bigger things and are using the NZ
trip as a try out to see how they will cope with something simple
before they venture further afield.

Some are using hotels/motels and some have taken camping gear to
reduce costs - you can do the same anywhere.

For example I have several couples in NZ at present on a range of
bikes and they are interested in us shipping their bikes to the UK
next year for a tour of the UK and maybe Europe - one of them only
wants a One Way shipment to the UK because he's planning on riding
home to Australia via the Middle East.

Others are going for 12 months and taking trailers and coming home in
our 2008 return shipment.

Over the next couple of years we will expand our list of shipping
destinations to include USA and South Africa and China is also on our
list, but there are some difficulties. Not getting into China, but
getting around the Provinces - they all have different rules and some
are not very helpful to motorcycle touring.

On a budget? Thailand (& neighbours) by step-through.
Because of the quality of most roads in the world, carbied, not too high
tech, dual-purpose bikes seem to the be the way to go.

Most people who ship their bikes to New Zealand spend a month there.
Most people who do round-the-world type trips seem to take 12-18 months
or longer depending on their finances or 6-8 months for a
London-Melbourne trip.

1 month isn't very long. It'd probably be cost prohibitive to embark on
a journey that short going any further than Australia or New Zealand.

There are several Australian based tour operators who operate tours
through many parts of Asia, usually 2-2.5 weeks duration for between
$5-7,000 including airfares, usually on bikes local to the region you're
in. I'm planning to do one of these trips in 18-24 months. Probably to
India/Nepal or thereabouts.
