FZR600, Newbie needs help
|
Hey group. I obtained a FZR600 (1993) for free from a relative. I'm pretty
new to street bikes, and I'm having a problem that I can't figure out.
The bike starts fine but then starts to sputter and backfire to the point
that a flame is visible from the pipe almost instantly after starting and
stays that way even after it warms up.
Again, I don't know much about street bikes, but I know enough to see that
this bike has been modified. It has a D&D pipe, has been lowered, and
according to my brother has also had a valve job, bigger cams, rejetted, and
some kind of aftermarket ignition control box. He claims it dyno'ed out @
84hp. Right now it acts like it has about 20. It will not idle at all. If
you let it drop below 3k, it dies. Did not have this problem 1 year ago. Any
Ideas out there for a possible cause?

Yeah, well, it has sat unridden for a year, and the gasoline has turned
into gum and varnish in the carburetors. The idle jets and idle mixture
ports are plugged up.
Drain down the float bowls and squirt a 50/50 mixture of gasoline and
Berryman B-12
Choke and Carburetor Cleaner directly into the float bowls through the
fuel hose.
Let the gasoline/B-12 mix sit in the carbs for about half an hour and
then reconnect the fuel line and start the engine.
It will clean out the idle jets and the idle mixture ports, but it will
put out so much alcohol fumes it will make your eyes sting, so do this
procedure outdoors.
You'll have to start the engine on the choke. Turn the idle speed up
high enough so the engine will still run as you gradually turn the
choke off. When the engine will idle without the choke, you can
gradually turn the idle speed down to normal.
For a final cleaning, add 4 or 5 ounces of B-12 to a full tank of
gasoline and go for a slow ride. Avoid using high RPM, the alcohol in
B-12 will wash oil off the cylinder walls.

(PS, as far as fuel, it has fresh 93 octane pump gas. Engine has about 3,000
miles from rebuild, 10,200 on bike)
